Long before writer Dale Mettam and I started working on the webcomic Luci Phurr’s Imps, we did a prose version of the story. It was a blast to work on. And on top of that, coloring jedi master, Tracy Bailey, was kind enough to share her Skittles palette with us. This is just one of the twenty-something pages that we did together. And if enough fans request a compilation of the webcomic into a book format, I assure you this story will be part of the package.

Last year, one of my favorite movies was Zombieland. For me, it ranked up there with Shaun of the Dead. Nothing like a bag of humor and evil, all wrapped into one. My two daughters are still very young, but I have every intention of getting them out of the house as soon as possible. Sadly, I’m an awesome parent (as is their mom), and they will probably want to live with us forever. But, I’ve been planning on their departure since the day they were born. And I’m sticking with my plan. There are so many places domestically here in the states, and in other countries as well, that I want to visit. I’ve always loved to travel, and the older I get the more I want to do it. Don’t get me wrong, I plan on vacationing with the whole family for a while(recently it was the Renassaince Festival, and Disney World). But when my two girls are out on their own, that’ll be two less mouths to feed, and more souvenirs for mom and dad. Some people have countdowns for the New Year. The Mayans had it for 2012. I have it for the exodus of my daughters.

I just showed my age on this title. As a kid I loved the show “Good Times.” And of course my favorite character was J.J. But that wasn’t my motivation for sketching this piece. I was actually thinking of all the times that I did stupid things with firecrackers, as a youth. I was no wild child growing up. But because I followed the rules so well, there were definitely those times where I wondered what was on the outside of the rule box. My rule box. And, I found that answer in firecrackers. Stealing? Never. Cheating? Nope. Lies? On rare occasions, but not to the parents. Firecrackers? Every chance I got!!!! In order to keep my post short, I’ll go into my firecracker mischief in a future post. I’m bound to lose some fans when that happens.

Lilly

This is Lilly and her parrot, also named Lilly. Both of which were created and colored by my daughter, Phoenix. The story goes that she’s a fairy that creates candy with her magic. Her sidekick parrot was taught to say the name “Lilly”, but apparently never learned any words after. So the name Lilly for the parrot seemed appropriate.

I came up with this sketch based on a character my daughter made up. Her name is J.C. McMullins…and that’s pretty much it. I was never given a story, or provided any descriptions. But I liked the name so much that it got me sketching. I’m sure at some point my daughter will come across this blog and smile at her inspired creation. And I would then tell her to quit smiling and come up with a fun story if she ever wants me to do more than just a sketch. And then I would follow it up with a “Go clean up your room!”

Renaissance fair

Just came back from the Renaissance festival and I had a little of everything. There was plenty to choose from. Funnel Cakes. Crawfish. Texas sized Turkey Legs. Ale. You name it! The only thing I didn’t have was Alligator.

Rodeo Drive

As a long time Texas resident, one of my favorite annual things to do is attend the rodeo. It’s mostly about the ambiance. I love everything from the bull riding to the Texas sized food portions. But the thing I enjoy most is seeing the outstanding art displays put on by kids of all ages. Elementary through high school. I’m often times amazed at the art many of these kids actually produce. It’s quite humbling for me as I realize that I was nowhere near as good as any of them, when I was their age.
